The first story takes place inside a large company whose public image is progressive, fashionable and attentive to diversity. Internally, however, its employees remain trapped by hierarchy, gender expectations and the fear of saying the wrong thing.

A central figure is Sakurai, an experienced female employee who has survived long enough to reach management. Her ability is undeniable, but she has learned to communicate in a blunt, defensive manner. She knows that a male manager can be forceful and decisive, whereas a woman behaving identically is described as aggressive, emotional or difficult.

A younger employee, Kogure, works on advertising and product promotion. One campaign includes an image of two women whose relationship is deliberately ambiguous. Some viewers might read them as friends, while others might see them as lovers. Sakurai warns that the design risks turning sexual identity into a fashionable marketing device. Her point is not that the women should be removed, but that the company must understand how the image will be interpreted by people outside the conference room.
