The novel opens with the central character, Unute or ‘B,’ preparing for a mission with a secret government organization investigating unusual phenomena. B is an immortal man of indeterminate age and race, capable of quick healing and prone to violent outbursts when angered. His supervisor, Keever, maintains a good relationship, while the head of the department, Diana Ahuja, remains less transparent. After surviving an explosion caused by a soldier wired with explosives, B and the department deal with a dangerous pig, nearly as old as B, at an underground base.
Jeff Stonier, a soldier in the department, seeks solace after losing his husband, Thakka, in the pig incident. The story unfolds through flashbacks, revealing B’s birth 80,000 years ago as a demi-god with immortality, his search for another immortal being, and his relationships with mortal women. Unute’s journey also intersects with a vengeful immortal pig and a mysterious cult seeking the end of Death, personified by B.
Diana suspects internal sabotage in the department and initiates an investigation. As events unfold, it becomes apparent that the department’s true goal is to create a super soldier with B’s DNA. The narrative delves into B’s encounters with various individuals, including a stowaway boy and a creature on a ship, both connected to his past.
