Tea & Time Loops is a cozy fantasy murder mystery about Wen Ashwood, the anxious, accident-prone owner of the failing Gilded Cup tea shop in Marrowind, who gets trapped in a repeating day after the town magistrate, Lady Orlaine, is poisoned in their shop. It wants to be a whimsical time-loop detective story, a queer romantic comedy, a found-family small-town fantasy, a satire of bureaucracy, a redemption arc for a failed magical student, and a cozy murder puzzle about poisoned tea. Mostly, it is an overstuffed confection of sentient teacups, biting books, gossiping grandmothers, runaway brooms, pastry animals, magical debt, and repeatedly dead magistrates, so determined to be charming that it rarely gives any emotion enough room to breathe.
Wen begins the story broke, embarrassed, and desperate. They run the Gilded Cup, a tea shop whose reputation is almost as shaky as their hands. Wen has already failed at the Marrowind Academy for Practical Magic after a kettle-warming disaster, lost a maid job at Lady Orlaine’s manor after setting old fabric on fire, and burned through a bakery apprenticeship after gingerbread soldiers revolted. The tea shop is their last chance, but rent is overdue, customers are scarce, and Orlaine, their landlord and magistrate, keeps insulting their brewing skills while somehow continuing to visit.
In the prologue, Wen goes to Barter & Bone, a sinister junk shop run by Silas Grin, a shadowy, grinning creep who sells lost objects, dubious charms, and magical wares under predatory payment plans. Wen wants the legendary Kettle Codex, a sentient tea manual containing powerful recipes. Silas sells it to them through a living ledger that updates debts at sunrise and moonrise, complete with fees, interest, and ominous “time revisit” charges. Wen believes the Codex might save the shop. The reader can see immediately that the Codex will instead turn their life into a slapstick debt trap.
