The sixth book continues Tara Selter’s life inside the repeated eighteenth of November. By this point she and many others have lived for thousands of repetitions of the same date. They have aged, formed communities, attempted research projects, built archives, repaired buildings, grown food, fallen in and out of love, and repeatedly asked whether they can escape the broken day. This sixth volume is set mainly in Campania, around Naples, Herculaneum and a network of greenhouses and houses occupied by the people trapped in time. It is a quieter book than a thriller, but everything in it builds toward a new collective decision: not simply to “exit” the eighteenth of November, but to try to return through time by retracing their own journeys.
At the beginning Tara arrives in Naples with a heavy bag and a box of old vegetable seeds from Selter’s garden in Clairon-sous-Bois. Her car has broken down south of Milan, so she has had to continue by train. Daniel meets her at the station. She expects the place they are going to visit to be like a museum or archive, but instead he takes her across a half-abandoned construction site on the edge of Naples. This is the “future laboratory,” where Kimon and Toril are working on the carbonised papyrus scrolls from Herculaneum.
The papyrus project is one of the main threads of the novel. Kimon and Toril believe that the blackened scrolls from Herculaneum, especially the Epicurean writings of Philodemus, may help them understand their own situation in the stopped day. They are not simply interested in ancient philosophy as scholarship. They are looking for analogies, fragments, conceptual tools: atoms, time, movement, stillness, freedom, the garden, the connection between small elements and larger worlds. They plan to use advanced scanning equipment to read scrolls without physically opening and destroying them. Much of the early part of the novel is devoted to the technical and philosophical explanation of this project: black ink on blackened papyrus, non-invasive scans, tomography, spectroscopy, digital reconstruction, high-resolution printouts, and the need to preserve results physically before the repeated day erases digital records.
