Taylor Jenkins Reid’s novel The Last Days of Vic and Coco begins in California in June 1974. Vic and Coco are experienced con artists who operate under the aliases Crown Vic and Baby Blue. They have travelled and worked together for six years, but federal agents are now closing in on them, forcing them to consider leaving California. Although neither woman knows the other’s real name or place of origin, they have become the closest thing either of them has to a family.

Coco dreams of escaping the United States altogether and starting over somewhere sophisticated and glamorous, such as Monaco. To make that possible, she suggests finding Roman McLeland, a skilled card counter she once met in Reno. Roman now lives in Canyonville, Arizona.

After arriving in town, Vic and Coco book a room at a motel and visit Willie’s, a local pool hall owned and operated by Willie and Louie. There, they unexpectedly encounter Tony, a man they had hustled in a bar the night before. Tony recognises them and, having heard stories about Crown Vic and Baby Blue, correctly works out their identities. Despite her hesitation, Vic agrees to have dinner with him the following evening.
