The Disappearers

The novel is set primarily in Kingston, Jamaica, during the late 1990s, a period marked by political violence, gang control of inner-city communities, and deep distrust between ordinary citizens, criminals, and the police. The novel follows several intersecting characters whose lives revolve around one question: what does it mean to disappear in a society where power depends on visibility, fear, and control?

At the center of the novel is Peter Wilson, a young man from a poor Kingston neighborhood who works as a community activist. Peter is not a gangster, nor is he politically powerful, but he believes in the possibility of social reform. He helps local residents apply for housing, negotiates with politicians, and tries to keep young men from being pulled into gang life. Peter is idealistic, stubborn, and often naïve about how dangerous his work makes him. He believes that reason and compromise can overcome violence, even though the environment around him constantly contradicts this belief.

Another major figure is Aston “Astie” Thompson, a feared gang leader who controls territory in Kingston through intimidation, loyalty, and violence. Astie is charismatic, ruthless, and highly intelligent. He understands the political system better than many politicians do and knows how to manipulate both government officials and the police. He sees violence not as chaos but as a tool for order. To Astie, power is about being known, feared, and remembered. Disappearing, in his world, is equivalent to death.
