The Strangers

The book opens in contemporary Britain, in the period following the death of the narrator’s mother and during her father’s slow recovery from bowel cancer. The unnamed narrator is a successful novelist and screenwriter in her late forties, living in London with her partner. She is physically exhausted, emotionally raw, and still deeply entangled in grief. At the same time, she is dealing with the long-term consequences of repeated miscarriages and infertility, having lost many pregnancies over the years without ever giving birth to a child.

Around this period, strange animals begin appearing across the UK. They are eventually named “mimmoths”: medium-sized, elephant-like creatures with long trunks, flat faces, and fur, but no obvious resemblance to any known species. They move calmly through towns, gardens, roads, and railway stations, largely ignoring humans. They eat pests such as slugs, rats, and pigeons and do not attack people. The public reacts with a mix of curiosity, fear, and fascination. News footage circulates online, and the animals quickly become the subject of speculation and conspiracy theories.

One of the first major incidents occurs in Seaside Heights, New Jersey, where an American man known online as WishMoney livestreams himself trapping a mimmoth in the trunk of a car. The footage abruptly cuts out, and later videos show a mimmoth inside a garage, blood sprayed across the walls. Internet users track down the house, and paramedics are sent. When they arrive, they find the man Danny—who bought WishMoney’s car—confused but physically unharmed. He claims he simply opened the garage and let the animal go. He appears oddly calm and detached.
