De Man met Duizend Gezichten (The Man with a Thousand Faces) by Lex Noteboom (2023)

The Man with a Thousand Faces is a complex thriller that weaves together three storylines and timelines. In 2034, Sophie discovers a locked laptop belonging to her mother, Noëlla, in Portland, Oregon, while trying to uncover the source of her suppressed memories and PTSD. In the second storyline, set between 2019 and 2023, an unnamed Dutch mercenary seeks answers regarding a mysterious operation he was involved in during 2019. The third and central storyline takes place in 2019, revolving around Daniel Lechkov, his wife Michelle, and their daughter Alexa, who are forced to return to the fictive post-Soviet nation of Kazichie following the death of Daniel’s twin brother, the president. The country is controlled by the Lechkov family, who exploit its resources, leading to tension with the indigenous population.

In 2021, an unnamed mercenary confronts Noëlla, revealing his quest to uncover the identity of the “Man with a Thousand Faces.” He recognizes her from Kazichie and agrees to discuss matters downstairs.

In 2019, Daniel and Michelle head to Dubai for a vacation when they learn of Daniel’s twin brother’s death. They return to Kazichie, where they encounter an uneasy atmosphere and a foreboding statue of a faceless soldier known as “The Man with a Thousand Faces.” Daniel is coerced into taking over as president to prevent a power vacuum after his brother’s death. Michelle is warned by the widow of the previous president to escape as soon as possible.
