Minor Detail is a short novel by Adania Shibli, a Palestinian author born in 1974, which explores the aftermath of a brutal crime committed during the 1948 War in Palestine, known as the Nakba by Palestinians and the War of Independence by Israelis. The novel is divided into two parts, each offering a unique perspective on the historical events.
In the first part of the novella, the narrative focuses on the Israeli soldiers who have been dispatched to the Negev desert in 1949. Their mission is to secure the southern border region with Egypt and prevent the return of Palestinian refugees and guerilla fighters who were expelled or fled their homes during the conflict. The story provides a detailed account of the soldiers’ monotonous and repetitive activities as they establish temporary shelters and carry out expeditions. The soldiers, exhausted and intoxicated, commit a horrific crime by gang-raping a young Palestinian woman they have held captive and then burying her in the desert.
The second part of the novella shifts to the first-person perspective of an unnamed young Palestinian woman living in Ramallah, under Israeli occupation. She becomes obsessed with the gruesome crime after coming across a journalistic account. The fact that the incident occurred exactly 25 years before her birth piques her interest. She reaches out to the Israeli journalist who wrote the story, hoping to obtain more information or evidence. However, her lack of freedom of movement as a Palestinian living in “Area A” hinders her ability to access archives and museums in Israel where the evidence might be stored.
