Hävitys (Destruction) by Iida Rauma (2021)

Part One

A has gotten in the habit of running at night. Rain lashes the muddy streets of Turku as A, a history teacher who suffers from insomnia, runs night after night past the wooden houses of a former working-class neighborhood to the Science Park technology hub, where the solitude emanates a familiar menace.

One night, a gray car resembling a DeLorean speeds into an abandoned lot behind Science Park. The door opens, and a woman in a white coat dashes out. A watches from the darkness as a shadowy figure shouts at the woman to come back, then drags her into the car. A decides to intervene, but the car starts up and races right at her. A flees through the empty lots and office buildings. It is only when lying at home in bed, sweaty and sleepless, that A realizes why the woman in the white coat seemed so familiar.
