Two days before Christmas Eve, asle takes down the St Andrew’s Cross painting and contemplates an upcoming visit from asleik for lutefisk. He recalls the first meeting of asle and ales, who quickly become a couple. He prepares a meal for asleik but remains somewhat distant during dinner, lost in thoughts of religion and painting.
He visualizes asle at an alehouse, dealing with marital problems and issues of alcoholism, and his own struggles with relationships. Asle attempts to call the hospital but ultimately cannot bring himself to do it.
